The centre stone

Choose the stone first.

Lab-grown diamond engagement rings in Australia start with a choice you can see: the centre stone’s shape and size on the hand. Compare its dimensions, clarity, colour and independent report before deciding on the ring. ENBOM DIAMONDS makes new rings in 18ct gold as standard, with 14ct available on request.

Which shape do you want to see on your hand?

Start with the outline of the centre stone. A lab-grown oval engagement ring has a long, rounded shape; a pear comes to a point; an emerald cut has straight edges. A two-stone ring lets two shapes sit together.

Our photographed rings show what those outlines can do in a setting. Use the photographs to identify a shape or proportion you like. They do not specify the stones available for a new order, or establish that the pictured centre stones are lab-grown.

How much size will the carat weight show?

Carat measures weight, while the stone’s length and width tell you more about the outline you will see. Weight can sit below the widest part of a stone, so two stones of the same carat weight can appear different sizes (GIA, checked 1 October 2026).

For an oval, compare both millimetre measurements rather than length alone. Its elongated outline can also create an impression of greater size (GIA, checked 1 October 2026). The carat and visible-size guide shows why the measurements deserve a place beside the carat figure.

Should you pay for VVS clarity or D colour?

Most of the lab-grown stones we use are VVS1 or VVS2. The grade of the particular centre stone belongs on its quote and report. Clarity is graded under 10× magnification; some characteristics recorded in a grade are difficult to see with the naked eye (GIA, checked 1 October 2026).

My view is that a VS1 or VS2 stone can be fine to the eye. If it looks clean when worn, I would compare it with a VVS option before paying more for the higher grade. I feel similarly about D versus E colour: the difference can be almost invisible to me. I would look at the actual stones under comparable light before choosing either letter.

What report comes with the centre stone?

Our policy is to use IGI reports for lab-grown stones. A centre stone of 0.30 carat or more comes with an independent laboratory report included in the price. Smaller centre stones, side stones and pavé stones are not individually reported.

An IGI lab-grown diamond report records the stone’s laboratory-grown origin and characteristics, including its measurements, carat weight, colour and clarity (IGI, checked 1 October 2026). Ask which exact centre stone a report covers, then use the IGI report-check guide to compare its number and details.

Which gold should go around the stone?

18ct gold is our standard for a new ring, and 14ct gold is available on request. Tell me the gold colour you have in mind when you ask about a centre stone; the metal and the stone can then be specified together in your individual quote.

Our 18ct pieces are stamped 750. A testing laboratory in China checks the finished piece and issues a certificate for it. That finished-piece certificate and the centre stone’s grading report describe different things, so keep both with your ring’s documents.

How do you order a ring around your chosen stone?

To design your own lab-grown engagement ring, send the shape you like, the visible size you have in mind and a photo or idea if you have one. ENBOM DIAMONDS can make a new piece from a reference, subject to feasibility. If you are comparing specific reported stones, include their report numbers.

The exact centre stone, metal and ring design need an individual quote. Read how it works for the design, payment and delivery steps, then send your preferred shape to start the conversation.

Questions

Short answers.

Can I choose an oval centre stone for a lab-grown engagement ring?

Yes. Start with the oval’s outline and its length and width in millimetres, then compare the exact lab-grown stone’s clarity, colour and report. The photographed oval solitaire is a design reference; its image does not specify the stone for your new ring. See the oval ring page for more on the shape.

Will a higher carat weight always look larger?

No. Carat measures weight, including parts of the stone you cannot see from above. When comparing two lab-grown centre stones, ask for their millimetre measurements as well as their carat weights. The visible-size guide explains how stones of equal weight can present different outlines.

Is VVS clarity necessary for a lab-grown engagement ring?

Most lab-grown stones we use are VVS1 or VVS2, but I would also consider a VS1 or VS2 stone that looks clean to the eye. Compare the particular stones and their reports. A higher clarity label alone does not tell you which centre stone you will prefer when you see it.

Should I choose D or E colour?

I would compare the actual D and E stones under similar light. To my eye, paying more for D can mean paying for a difference that is almost impossible to see. Colour is only one part of the choice: look at the stone’s shape, visible dimensions and overall appearance before deciding.

Does every stone in the ring have an IGI report?

No. Our policy is IGI reports for lab-grown stones, and an independent report is included in the price when the centre stone is 0.30 carat or larger. Smaller centre stones, side stones and pavé stones are not individually reported. Ask which stone each document identifies.

Can I request 14ct gold for my ring?

Yes. ENBOM DIAMONDS makes new rings in 18ct gold as standard and can make one in 14ct gold on request. State your preferred metal when you enquire about the lab-grown centre stone so that both appear in the individual specification and quote. The ordering guide explains the next steps.
