You and me
Two stones, one ring
A toi et moi engagement ring places two principal stones together on one band. The French phrase means “you and me”; the design can pair different shapes, sizes or colours. Its success depends on the space between the stones and how their outlines balance on the hand. A wedding band should be considered while that arrangement is being drawn.

What does “toi et moi” mean?
“Toi et moi” means “you and me”, a name for a two-stone arrangement associated with a couple. One famous example is the diamond-and-sapphire ring attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte’s engagement to Joséphine de Beauharnais in 1796. The attribution of the surviving ring as her actual engagement ring is uncertain, so the story is best told as an association rather than proof of the style’s origin. The design itself leaves plenty of room for personal choices: two matching stones can feel balanced, while different outlines make each stone distinct. The Diamond Collective on the 1796 association; The Journal of Gemmology on the disputed identification.
How do you balance two different shapes?
Start by viewing both stones together, at their proposed face-up sizes. A pear beside an emerald cut creates a conversation between a curve and a straight edge. Our photographed Pear and emerald-cut two-stone ring ring shows that pairing on a slim band. In Yellow and white two-stone ring, a white pear meets a yellow rectangular stone on an open, slender band. Those photographs show layouts and visible colours; they do not establish the material of stones for a new order. To make the composition feel settled, compare each stone’s visual weight, their angle and the gap between them before adding further detail.
Should the stones have claws or bezels?
Claws can keep both outlines light, particularly where two stones approach each other. Bezels give each shape a clear metal border; around a pear, the setting should also account for its point. GIA identifies a V-shaped claw or a full bezel as ways to protect that vulnerable tip. Mixing settings is possible as a design choice, but compare the two heads together so one does not look unintentionally heavier. An 18ct yellow gold band can provide a shared frame for two contrasting outlines. Decide on the metal after seeing how it reads against the proposed stones. GIA’s pear-setting advice.
Can a wedding band sit beside two stones?
Yes, though the two-stone head may extend unevenly across the finger. A straight band can leave a deliberate gap; a contour band can follow one side of the arrangement. Check where the stones, claws or bezels approach the wedding band in a side view. If you own the band already, send a photograph and measurements with your reference. We can make a new ring from a photo or idea, discuss the two-stone layout and review its design before production. See the custom-order process.
Questions
Short answers.
Is a toi et moi ring an engagement ring?
It can be. “Toi et moi” describes the two-stone arrangement, not a rule about when the ring must be given or worn. If you are choosing it as an engagement ring, plan for daily wear and decide early whether a wedding band will sit beside it. The meaning can be personal without requiring the stones to match.
Must both stones be the same size?
No. Equal-sized stones can create a formal balance, while a smaller companion stone changes the emphasis. What matters visually is how their face-up outlines and settings work together. A long, narrow stone may appear more prominent than a compact stone of similar weight. Compare the pair on a hand-sized drawing or design view before choosing solely by carat figures.
Can the stones have different colours?
Yes. Our photographed Yellow and white two-stone ring ring shows a white pear-shaped stone beside a yellow rectangular one. The photograph establishes their visible colours and arrangement, not the stones’ species or grading. For a new order, describe the contrast you want and ask for the proposed stones and materials to be specified in the quote.
What wedding band works with a toi et moi ring?
A slim straight band keeps the two stones in focus and may leave some space near the ring’s head. A shaped band can follow the outer edge more closely. Neither approach is universally better. Look at the engagement ring from the side and decide whether you want the band to touch it, sit slightly apart or form a wider stack.
