One distinctive outline

A pear, your way

A pear engagement ring combines a rounded end with a single point, so its outline carries much of the design. A solitaire keeps that shape clear; side stones make the composition fuller. For a custom ring, decide how broad you want the pear to look, which way its point will face and where a wedding band should sit.

Which pear engagement ring style suits the shape?

Start with the outline before adding detail. A slim solitaire gives the pear room to read from across the hand. Side stones can balance its point or deliberately make the ring asymmetrical. In our photographed work, the Pink pear three-stone ring ring places two smaller pear shapes around a pink centre; the Pear and emerald-cut two-stone ring ring sets two different outlines side by side. They are examples of composition, rather than specifications for a new order. We have also made a pendant with a 1 ct lab-grown pear-cut diamond in platinum and 18ct yellow gold; that past order is separate from the photographed rings.

What proportions make a pear look balanced?

Look straight down at the proposed stone. Are its two sides even? Does the rounded end flow into a clear point, or does one shoulder look flatter? Then compare a broader pear with a slender one at a similar face-up size. There is no single ratio that suits every hand. GIA advises judging a pear’s symmetry, outline and any dark band across its centre alongside its measurements. A photograph or video of the actual proposed stone is more useful than choosing by length-to-width ratio alone. GIA’s pear-shaped diamond guide.

Do yellow gold and a bezel change the look?

An 18ct yellow gold band can make the pear’s outline feel warmer and more defined. Fine claws leave more of the edge visible; a bezel traces it in metal and gives the design a smoother perimeter. The pointed tip needs particular attention. GIA identifies it as the pear’s most vulnerable area and describes both a V-shaped claw over the point and a full bezel as protective options. Decide how much metal you want to see from above, then judge the setting with the proposed stone rather than in isolation. ENBOM DIAMONDS makes 18ct gold as standard, with 14ct available on request. How will a wedding band sit beside it?

A straight wedding band may leave a small gap beside a low pear setting. Some people like that space; others prefer a contour band shaped around the ring’s head. The pear’s orientation matters too: a point facing the band creates a different meeting line from a rounded end facing it. Send a photo of the band you plan to wear, if you have one. We can make a new ring from a photo or idea, discuss the stone and setting, and review the design before production. See how a custom order works.

Questions

Short answers.

Are pear engagement rings tacky?

A pear shape is conspicuous, and a large halo, heavy shoulders and several competing details can make one ring look busy. That does not make every pear ring tacky. If you like the outline but worry about the effect, start with a plain band and compare a solitaire with a restrained three-stone design. The ring should appeal to the person wearing it, including when seen at ordinary distance.

Should the pear point up or down?

Either direction works. Turn a sample or photograph both ways on the hand and notice how the point meets the knuckle and the wedding band. GIA describes point-down wear as traditional while recognising point-up and horizontal settings. For a custom ring, settle the orientation before finalising the setting and companion band. GIA’s pear-shaped diamond guide.

Can a pear engagement ring have side stones?

Yes. Side stones can echo the pear, frame its rounded end or introduce a different shape. Our photographed Pink pear three-stone ring ring uses smaller pear shapes above and below a pink centre. The photographed Pear and emerald-cut two-stone ring ring takes a less symmetrical route. Use those images to explain which balance you prefer; the stones and materials for a new ring are chosen for that order.

Will a straight wedding band fit against a pear ring?

It depends on the height and width of the setting, not only the pear outline. A straight band can sit close to a raised head, while a lower or wider head may leave a visible gap. If a flush stack matters to you, plan both rings together. If you already own the wedding band, send a clear side photograph and its dimensions when discussing the new ring.
